EPD fines Columbus battery maker for lead release

Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division plans to fine a Columbus, Ga. battery maker $41,000.

The EPD has proposed the fine for Exide Technologies, which has a lead-acid battery plant in Columbus, the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports.

The fine is for violating federal emissions standards on lead in November and December 2016 and January 2017.

Exide agreed to construct an enclosure around its four oxide silos by May 31, 2018. Until then, the company will conduct monthly inspections to ensure…
