Alex Rodriguez-Roig / President of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami - Dade
Alex Rodriguez-Roig, president of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, who came to the U.S. from Cuba at the age of 5, truly believes in helping less fortunate children by providing them with hope, freedom and opportunities. He brings this belief to his position as president of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade.
As president, Rodriguez-Roig oversees five clubs (Hank Kline, Kendall, South Beach, Northwest and Gwen Cherry) that serve 8,000 children annually. Based on a 2013 Economic Impact study, Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade provides an annual overall community impact totaling $78 million in income generations and savings to Miami-Dade County families and taxpayers as a whole.
Rodriguez-Roig has been part of the Boys & Girls Club movement since he joined Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade in February 1996. He spent his first three years with the organization at Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade's Kendall Club, working directly with the kids.
He then served as the organization's academic director, through which he developed Academic Improvement Methods (A.I.M.), a comprehensive educational enhancement curriculum to improve the academic levels of children in after school programs, at a low cost to the organization. A.I.M. was showcased in Tallahassee, Fla. at the Boys & Girls Clubs Florida Area Council Conference in 2000 as a premier after school program, and has been adopted by several Boys & Girls Clubs throughout the state.
From 2001-'03, Rodriguez-Roig was assistant executive director of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. He has served as president of the organization since 2003.
In his first few years as president, he concentrated on bringing financial stability to the then 65-year-old organization. He diversified and expanded its $4 million annual funding sources, and increased its unrestricted cash reserves from just over three weeks' to three months' worth. Since that time, the organization has been financially thriving.
In streamlining Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade's youth programming, Rodriguez-Roig has allowed the clubs to improve their services to children, as well as reduce expenses. He also established numerous committees and redeveloped the board of directors.
Rodriguez-Roig is led plans to expand Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade's capacity to serve more youth at the new South Beach Club, which serves approximately 400 children from the local area. He is also leading plans to expand the Hank Kline and Northwest Clubs.
Rodriguez-Roig served as treasurer on the board of directors of the Florida Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs from 2008-2017, which has been instrumental in bringing over $36 million to Boys & Girls Clubs throughout the state of Florida.
For Boys & Girls Clubs of America, he previously served as chair of the Southeast Administrative Conference Committee, Standards of Organizational Effectiveness Movement Taskforce, and Commitment to Quality Taskforce. He also was previously appointed to the Training and Professional Development Advisory Committee and Professional Advisory Committee for the Southeast Region, and as a board member of The Professional Associations of Boys & Girls Clubs.
In April 2012, he was appointed to the Florida International University College of Education Advisory Board.
In 2015, Rodriguez-Roig was honored with the Torch Award for Community Leadership by the Florida International University (FIU) Alumni Association. In 2014, he was named a Lifestyle Media Group Up & Comer in the Nonprofit category. He was also named to South Florida Business Journal's 2013 40 Under 40 list, recognizing the most dynamic individuals under the age of 40 in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties who work diligently to contribute to their company's growth and to improve the local community.
Additional awards and accolades include the 2005 Top 100 People of Like Minds by Florida International Magazine, the Florida Marlins' Heart of the Community Award in 2005 for his work in the community, and the 2005 New Executive of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Rodriguez-Roig holds a bachelor's degree in Biology/Education from Florida International University in Miami, Fla. He currently lives in Miami, Fla. with his wife and children.
