Chairman of the Board at The Bank of South Carolina


Background - 4th generation banker (and his son is now a 5th-generation banker at his bank), native Charlestonian. Educated at Choate (prestigious prep school in Connecticut) and at the University of Pennsylvania (B.A. degree in economics). Served In the navy for two years after college. Then started his banking career in 1972. Spent the first 14 years of his career with C & S Bank (excluding one year when he worked in New York). Helped found the Bank of South Carolina in 1986. Served as president and CEO of the bank for 26 years before becoming the chairman of the board.

Extremely involved in the community, especially in the areas of education (trustee and former chair of the board, long-time treasurer for Ashley Hall; former trustee and chair of the board at Wofford College; former trustee and chair of the S.C. independent Colleges and Universities board) and the environment (ACE Basin - worked to help protect 220,000 acres of land; former chair of the Charleston County Conservation Bank Board; trustee for Hobcaw Barony - 16,000 acre wildlife refuge).

Numerous honors and awards including:

 1997 - Distinguished Citizen Award - Wofford Alumni Council
1997 - Avery Citizenship Award - Avery Research Center 
2008 - Order of The Palmetto (SC's highest civilian award) (interesting fact - Hugh's father and brother have also received this honor - doubt if there is another family with three recipients)
 2015 - inducted into the South Carolina Business Hall of Fame

Hobbies: avid duck hunter and fisherman; world-wide traveler
