Germany-based Covestro AG, one of the world’s largest polymer companies, announced Oct. 9 that it will build a new production unit at its existing site in Baytown, east of Houston.

The project, which is expected to cost about $1.72 billion, is the largest single investment in the company’s history, according to the Oct. 9 press release. Formerly Bayer MaterialScience, Covestro became a separate legal entity in September 2015, but its history dates back decades, according to its website.
