Nancy Barnes, executive editor of the Houston Chronicle, has been named NPR’s chief news executive, the Washington, D.C.-based radio news service announced Oct. 16.

Barnes joined the Chronicle in 2013 after serving as the top editor at the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

NPR’s last head editor, Michael Oreskes, was ousted nearly a year ago amid allegations of sexual harassment. The position has been vacant since Oreskes’ firing.

Barnes will begin in the new role on Nov. 28.
